In 1879, Joseph Edward Wellman donated 40 acres of land for the construction of a railroad, helping establish what would later become the community of Wellman, Iowa. The town was officially incorporated in 1885 and named in honor of Wellman for his contribution. Although later railroad routes shifted trade and development to the south of the community, Wellman remained resilient and has continued to grow into the thriving small town it is today.
Residents and visitors enjoy a variety of outdoor activities at the local park, which offers amenities such as tennis courts, golf, hiking trails, baseball fields, and open green spaces. The park also features a bandstand where concerts and community events are held throughout the year. Whether attending a local performance or simply enjoying a peaceful walk along the trails, Wellman provides a welcoming environment and a strong sense of community for everyone who visits or calls it home.
